Bentonite is known as "universal clay"

Time : 2026-03-27

Bentonite is a clay rock mainly composed of montmorillonite. It has excellent expansibility, adsorption, thixotropy and suspension properties. It is widely used in metallurgy, casting, petroleum, chemical industry, building materials, food, environmental protection and other fields, known as the "universal clay".

1.Production process

1Natural Purification (Physical Processing)

Using natural bentonite ore as raw material, through mining → crushing → drying → grinding → sieving → purification (sodium/calcium modification) → testing → finished product. It can produce calcium-based and sodium-based bentonite with simple process and low cost, meeting general filling, adsorption and bonding needs.

2Modification and Activation Process

Through sodium treatment, acidification, organic modification, etc., to improve expansion ratio, ion exchange capacity and organic compatibility, used in high-end coatings, drilling fluids, medicine, cat litter and other fields.

2.Core Features

1High expansibility: expands several to ten times in water, with strong filling and sealing effect

2Strong adsorption: porous structure, adsorbs heavy metals, pigments, impurities and odors

3Thixotropy: gel at rest, fluid when stirred, friendly for coating and drilling fluid construction

4Suspension stability: prevents particle settling, improves system uniformity and stability

5Good bonding property: high forming strength, used in casting, pellets and building materials bonding

6Eco-friendly and non-toxic: no heavy metals, compliant with food contact, environmental and pet product standards

3.Application industries

1Casting and Metallurgy

Used as molding sand binder to improve strength and permeability, ensure casting precision; used as iron ore pellet binder to improve pelletizing rate and strength.

2Petroleum Drilling

Used to prepare drilling mud for wall protection, anti-collapse, cooling drill bits and carrying cuttings, a core material for drilling engineering.

3Building Materials and Environmental Protection

Used for waterproofing and plugging, mortar thickening, sewage treatment (adsorbing heavy metals/suspended solids), soil improvement.

4Coatings and Chemical Industry

Thickening, thixotropic, anti-settling, improving coating workability and storage stability.

5Food and Pharmaceutical

Food clarifier, anti-caking agent, pharmaceutical excipients, anti-diarrheal agent, compliant with food safety standards.

6Pet and Daily Chemicals

High-quality cat litter raw material, fast clumping, odor adsorption, dust-free and safe.

Procurement Guide

1Parameters: Montmorillonite content ≥60%–85%, expansion ratio ≥10–30, moisture ≤10%, fineness 200–325 mesh;

2Modification: Choose calcium-based, sodium-based or organic modified as needed;

3Testing: Verify expansion, adsorption, suspension and bonding performance by small-batch test;

4Qualifications: Comply with national standards; food-grade requires FDA/food safety certification.
